Ho hapax epekeina  

I think that on a subconscious level (or perhaps even consciously) Lovecraft believed in the gods he wrote of. However, by denying their existence as just a figment of his imagination he tried to warm people to stay away from these spawns of anticosmic horror. So he was a spiritual person, regardless of what he said of religion, and that is because HPL was beyond our comprehention of time and our definition of spirituality and gods.
