When An Epicure in the Terrible first appeared in 1991, commemorating the centennial of H. P. Lovecraft’s birth, it was hailed as a significant contribution to Lovecraft studies. Included are histories of the Pnakotic Manuscripts, Eltdown Shards, Celaeno Fragments, G'harne Fragments, Seven Cryptical Books of Hsan, Book of Dzyan, R'lyeh Text, Dhol Chants, Ponape Scripture, Codex Dagonensis, Cultes des Goules, De Vermis Mysteriis, Book of Eibon, Unaussprechlichen Kulten, and of course, the infamous Necronomicon, as well as the history of Miskatonic University's library. Great for major Mythos fans, though perhaps a bit much for those interested more in the mood than the Mythos itself.

The Authentic Red Dragon

The Dragon Rouge is one of the most notorious of the little books of black magic known as grimoires. This Teitan Press publication includes a complete facsimile of the earliest known edition - a French printing that is dated 1521 (although it was probably circa 1800) - along with a complete English translation by Joshua A. Wentworth. It is prefaced with a thoughtful and sometimes humorous Introduction by Silens Manus. The text itself is typical of grimoires of the time, and is clearly related to the Grand Grimoire. Its anonymous author claims that the work is derived from the wisdom of the legendary King Solomon, and then sets down instructions for the creation of a number of magical implements: blasting rod (wand), talisman and magic circle, that are to be used to summon the demon Lucifugé Rofocale, who is then bound over to serve the sorcerer. In the process a great many sub-demons are named, and their attributes listed. There follows a series of magic spells or recipes for various purposes; from making oneself invisible, to winning the affection of another, to the cure of various common ailments. The book ends with a chart of lucky and unlucky days and a short version of the treasure-finding text known as La Poule Noire (The Black Hen). The Dragon Rouge was very popular in nineteenth century France, and is still said to be one of the most highly revered texts in certain Voodoo circles in Haiti.

Όμως, αν και εξαιρετικά δραστήριος, οι συλλογισμοί και η επιχειρηματολογία του συχνά δεν χαίρουν εγκυρότητας. Για τον λόγο αυτό διστάζω τις περισσότερες φορές να μεταφέρω εδώ κομμάτια της δουλειάς του, όπως και προβληματίστηκα αρκετά για το αν πρέπει ή όχι να παρουσιάσω το νέο του συγγραφικό «πόνημα».
Παρόλ' αυτά, οφείλω να το κάνω, και ως έτσι... η νέα εργασία του τιτλοφορείτε The Dark Knight of the Necronomicon, ονομασία που πηγάζει από την αγάπη του συγγραφέα για την μυθολογία του Σκοτεινού Ιππότη της Gotham City! Βέβαια, στις σελίδες του δεν θα συναντήσετε τον Batman, αλλά μια φιλοσοφική (;) απόπειρα του Warlock για το πάντρεμα της Λαβκραφτικής αντίληψης με την αποκρυφιστική παράδοση που διαμόρφωσε ο Σϊμωνας.
Έκπληξη πάντως προκαλεί το γεγονός πως ένας από τους βασικούς εμπνευστές του Warlock είναι ο Jason King, συγγραφέας του Postmodern Satanism...

The Goddess Apophenia has commanded me to write a further book; furthermore She wants it called The Octavo. Her reasons for this seem numerous, and in some cases para-logical.
Any great truth should also bring forth laughter, although the converse does not always apply.
She wants it called The Octavo in honour of Her priest Terry Pratchett who brought us the concept of Octarine and who has obviously channelled something far closer to the magical truth and far more amusing than that milquetoast paranoid H.P. Lovecraft.
We already have far too many fake, nasty, and useless Necronomicons around, a real Octavo that actually worked would make a nice change.
She says that She has, over the years, already shown me five and a half of the Eight Spells which underlie the meta-magical-hyper-physics of this universe, (everything comes in eights apparently), in the form of various equations. And if I behave myself I'll get the other two and a half.
The Octavo will thus consist of Eight Chapters, each one an exegesis upon one of the Eight Spells used to construct this reality.
«Octavo» just means «Book» apparently.
I don't know who or what made me call my first book Liber Null, «Book Nothing», but now it seems my doom to write «The Book», perhaps that means my last one after a lifetime's quest.
Anyway, I now seem to have some years of toil ahead punctuated by many and varied epiphanies and dark nights of the soul.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft may not have created the horror story, but his work in the genre remains vibrant and compelling to new generations of readers, spawning an entire mythos unto itself. Many of his stories were written some years before Lovecraft found a home for them in Weird Tales magazine, which was faltering at the time they printed Dagon, his first contribution to the pulp. In his letters he mentioned that he almost gave up sending stories when they insisted he re-do them by typewriter, a labor he despised. While HPL was also known to have collaborated anonymously with other authors, we have included only stories which are credited to him; the exception being several installments in 1924 recounting supposed adventures of the famous magician and escape artist Harry Houdini. HPL’s private letters confirm that he wrote the tales completely himself, based loosely on a verbal (and presumably fictitious) account Houdini gave Weird Tales founder JC Henneberger. ‘The Survivor’, printed in Weird Tales in July 1954 and written by August Derleth and HPL is considered by many to be a Derleth story with only minimal conceptual input from a Lovecraft fragment, and has therefore been excluded from [these volumes].

This is . . . a 2 volume set collecting all of HP Lovecraft’s writings from the original run of Weird Tales, stories, verse and letters to the editor. The works are presented chronologically by original publication date, aside from one or two alterations strictly for convenient page fitting. [The first] volume contains HPL’s material from oversized ‘bedsheet’ issues only. The contents pages list the story/verse title, the page(s) it appeared in the original pulp magazine, and the page it begins in [these volumes].

The content presented here is in facsimile form, scanned directly from the original pulp pages including all accompanying illustrations. No editing or resetting of the type has been done so as to preserve the true flavor of the period while distilling the HPL material. Print production was a varying commodity in the pulps, and we are at the mercy of decades-old technology coupled with the cheap, porous pulp paper. The oversized issues were especially guilty of poor production quality, with ink horded more strenuously than gold, making decent reproduction nearly impossible. These problems create many challenges for this kind of collection. Considerable cleanup has been done to the electronic files and multiple copies of the magazine were often sourced to improve the starting point. Weird Tales underwent several size and format changes over the years; the 1923 and ’24 issues with HPL (except for November 1924) were the oversized ‘bedsheet’ format. The mid to late 1920s and ’30s issues vary in size also, ’though they are closer to the ‘standard’ 7"x10" pulp size. The magazine eventually went to a digest in the 1950s shortly before its demise. We have retained the variations in size, again to preserve the content true to its original printing.

Το έργο αυτό κυκλοφορεί για δεύτερη φορά στην χώρα μας. Η πρώτη ήταν το 2003, από τις pulp εκδόσεις Terra Nova και σε μετάφραση Θεοπίστης Καβακοπούλου.
Σύντομα, θα κυκλοφορήσει και ο δεύτερος τόμος με τίτλο Η Μάσκα του Κθούλου.
